Southwest's Tammy Smith Named May Laker Champion for Kids

Calloway County Schools have named Tammy Smith as the May Laker Champion for Kids. Smith is a Kindergarten instructional assistant at Southwest Calloway Elementary School.

The Laker Champion for Kids is awarded each month to a Laker staff member who goes above and beyond for students and colleagues.

Smith was nominated by the award by Melissa Bogard, the front desk secretary at Southwest.

“When school begins this fall, Southwest will be missing a very important piece - one that has dedicated 28 years of service to Southwest Elementary, serving in multiple roles including kindergarten assistant, special education assistant, and computer lab teacher," wrote Bogard, "Throughout her career, she has consistently gone above and beyond for our students and staff, always giving 110%, no matter the task.

"She supports students in every possible way—helping in the cafeteria by wiping spills, opening milk cartons and ketchup packets, and ensuring students are cared for with patience and kindness. She also assists with afternoon car riders, working in all types of weather, from freezing rain and snow to extreme heat. No matter the conditions, she shows up with dedication and a smile.
She is an irreplaceable part of Southwest Elementary. Her commitment, work ethic, and genuine care for every child make a lasting impact on our school community. She exemplifies what it means to put children first, and I am personally happy to not only call her my co-worker but also my very good friend. She truly represents the spirit of a Laker Champion for Kids.”

Smith works closely with Southwest teacher Tiffanie Fields.

“She absolutely deserves this honor," said Fields. "She pours into our students like they were her own. She goes above and beyond in every aspect of caring for and supporting our students. She works patiently in small groups to help children build their skills and confidence, always meeting them where they are and encouraging them to grow. She notices their needs, both big and small and generously steps in- whether that means providing extra learning support or even purchasing items to ensure every child feels included and prepared. Most importantly, she shows genuine love and kindness to each student, creating a safe nurturing environment within our classroom. Her dedication, compassion and selflessness make her truly deserving of this recognition. I will be absolutely lost without her when she retires.”
