Calloway County Middle School Academic Team recently finished first in the mid-season tournament hosted by the West Kentucky Academic Association (WKAA). The tournament included 16 middle schools from all around Region One in Kentucky. After a great day of competition, the Lakers walked away with several individual accomplishments and the overall championship title.
Along with the overall championship, students were awarded medals in all areas of competition! In the area of science, the Lakers placed six students in the top ten with Ella Martin claiming the championship, followed by Aiden Hooper and Lillie Russell tying for second place, and Sarah Doyle in fourth place. The Lakers had five students in the top ten in the area of mathematics with Ava Bogard and Riley Hudson medaling in a tie for fourth place. In the area of social studies, five Lakers cracked the top ten scores with Molly Pierce finishing as runner-up, followed by Tyler Saalwaechter in third, and Mariana Hughes and Sean Williams being tied for fifth place. The Lakers had three students in the top ten of fine arts with Maya Munoz being named the champion followed by Ella Martin in third place. Three Lakers also broke the top ten in Language Arts with Maya Munoz claiming another championship, and Addi Finley coming in fifth place.
In the team event of Quick Recall, the Lakers brought home the championship while remaining undefeated for the tournament. The Lakers won all three of their pool games to place them as a first seed in the round of sixteen. The Lakers then won all four of the single elimination games to bring home the trophy. The Quick Recall team is composed of Maya Munoz, Sean Williams, Mariana Hughes, Aiden Hooper, Riley Hudson, Sarah Doyle, and Divine Ezinma. In addition, the Laker JV Quick Recall Team also competed in the varsity tournament on Friday. The JV team won their pool play bracket and was narrowly defeated in the elite eight round. They finished the day with a record of four wins and only one loss. The JV team members are Hillary Bohannon, Tyler Sebby, Mason Riley, Ella Martin, Molly Pierce, Evan Falwell, and Ava Bogard.
