CCMS Academic Team Wins Governor's Cup Regionals, Heads to State Finals
Calloway County Middle School's academic team were the champions of the regional Governor’s Cup tournament on February 15th at Heath Middle School. The Lakers totaled 58.5 team points, followed by Lone Oak in second with 24 points, and Heath in third with 16 points. This is the team's sixteenth regional championship in the last seventeen years.
Numerous students placed in individual competition. In science, the Lakers claimed the top three spots with Ava Bogard claiming the regional championship, followed by Collin Naber in second, and Theodore Perlow in third place. The Lakers also claimed the top three spots in social studies with Theodore Perlow claiming the regional championship, followed by Kyler McKeel in second, and Mason Falwell in third place. The Lakers claimed three spots in fine arts with Hayden Gilbert being named regional champion, Ellie Johnson coming in fourth place, and Ella Finley in sixth place. The Lakers also claimed three spots in mathematics with Ava Bogard claiming regional runner-up, followed by Kyler McKeel in third place, and Zack Haws in sixth place. Collin Naber claimed the language arts regional runner-up, followed by Leah Hughes in fifth place, and Madison Purdy in sixth place. In written composition, Leah Hughes took fifth place while Ellie Johnson finished in sixth place.
In the team events, the Lakers claimed the championship in Quick Recall. The Quick Recall team has a current season record of 30 wins and 0 losses with three tournament championships. The Quick Recall team is composed of Ava Bogard, Hayden Gilbert, Mason Falwell, Collin Naber, Kyler McKeel, and Theodore Perlow.
The Future Problem Solving team finished in a tie for first with team members Aubrey Cain, Hayden Gilbert, Ally Turner, Ellie Johnson, Lilah Hill, and Ashlyn Sebby.
The Lakers had some special recognition from the regional tournament, as their scores currently rank them amongst the state leaders. Ava Bogard had two finishes in the top ten of the state with a science score as 1st in the state and a math score of 6th place in the state. Collin Naber also had two finishes amongst the state leaders with a language arts score of 7th and a science score of 8th place. Theodore Perlow also had two scores in the top of the state with a history score ranked 3rd and a science score ranked 9th. In addition, Kyler McKeel’s score is 4th in history, Mason Falwell is 9th in history, and Hayden Gilbert is ranked 7th in the state in fine arts.
The Lakers have qualified for the state Governor's Cup competition in March, where the team finished second overall in Kentucky in 2024.
