CCMS Academic Team Wins District for 15th Straight Year
Calloway County Middle School Academic Team competed in the District Governors Cup tournament on Saturday, January 14th. After a great day of competition among the Lakers, Murray Middle, North Marshall and South Marshall Middle, the Lakers were named district champions for the fifteenth consecutive year. The Lakers totaled 82 team points, followed by Murray Middle with 23.5 team points.
Along with the overall championship, students were awarded medals in all areas of competition! In the area of science, the Lakers swept the top three places with Aiden Hooper being named champion, Ella Martin as runner-up, and Sarah Doyle claiming third place. The Lakers also claimed the top three spots in language arts with Maya Munoz being named champion, Collin Naber in second, followed by Hillary Bohannon in third. In the area of social studies, the Lakers once again claimed the top spots with Mariana Hughes claiming the championship, followed by Molly Pierce in second and Sean Williams in third place. The area of fine arts saw the top places going to the Lakers with Maya Munoz in first place, followed by Ella Martin in second and Hayden Gilbert in third place. Sean Williams claimed the championship in mathematics with Ava Bogard following in second place and Riley Hudson in fourth place. Finally, the composition competition had Elle Rekow taking the championship, with Hillary Bohannon in fourth place.
In written assessment, the Lakers had some scores that brought special recognition across the state! Maya Munoz’s fine arts score placed her as the second highest scoring individual in the state, and her language arts score finished as the fifth highest in Kentucky. In science, Aiden Hooper’s score placed 7th in the state while Ella Martin’s score finished as the 9th highest score in the state. These academic team scores are amongst over 250 middle schools that participate in the district tournament. Impressive!
In the team events, the Lakers claimed the championship in both Future Problem Solving and Quick Recall. The Future Problem Solving team is composed of Sarah Doyle, Mariana Hughes, Addison Finley, Hillary Bohannon, and Elle Rekow. The Quick Recall team is composed of Maya Munoz, Mariana Hughes, Aiden Hooper, Sean Williams, Lillie Russell, Divine Ezinma, Sarah Doyle, Riley Hudson, Ella Martin and Ava Bogard.
The Lakers are now setting their sights on the regional tournament in a couple of weeks.
