CCMS Academic Team Wins 17th Consecutive District Championship
Calloway County Middle School's Academic Team were district champions for the seventeenth consecutive year at the District Governor's Cup tournament on January 18 at Murray Middle School. The Lakers totaled 87 team points, followed by Murray Middle with 13 team points. The district also includes North Marshall Middle and South Marshall Middle.
Along with the overall championship, students were awarded medals in all areas of competition. In the area of science, the Lakers swept the top three places with Ava Bogard being named champion, Collin Naber as runner-up, and Theodore Perlow claiming third place. The Lakers also claimed the top three spots in fine arts with Hayden Gilbert being named champion, Ellie Johnson in second, followed by Ella Finley in third. In the area of social studies, the Lakers once again claimed the top spots with Kyler McKeel claiming the championship, followed by Mason Falwell in second, and Theodore Perlow in third place. The area of mathematics saw the top places going to the Lakers with Ava Bogard in first place, followed by Kyler McKeel in second, and Zack Haws in third place. Collin Naber claimed the championship in language arts, with Leah Hughes following in second place, and Madison Purdy in fourth place. Finally, the composition competition had Leah Hughes taking the championship, with Ellie Johnson and Hallie O’Dell tying for second place.
The Lakers had some scores that brought special recognition across the state. Ava Bogard had the highest individual score in the state in science as well as the 3rd highest score in mathematics. Collin Naber’s language arts score placed him as the highest scoring individual in the state, and his science score finished as the 2nd highest in Kentucky. In social studies, both Kyler McKeel and Mason Falwell had the 8th highest score in the state. In addition, Theodore Perlow’s score in science qualified as the 8th highest score, and Hayden Gilbert’s score put her as the 7th highest fine arts score in Kentucky. These academic team scores are amongst over 250 middle schools that participate in the district tournament.
In the team events, the Lakers claimed the championship in both Future Problem Solving and Quick Recall. The Future Problem Solving team is composed of Allyson Turner, Aubrey Cain, Hayden Gilbert, Ellie Johnson, Lilah Hill, and Ashlyn Sebby. The Quick Recall team is composed of Ava Bogard, Mason Falwell, Hayden Gilbert, Collin Naber, Kyler McKeel, and Theodore Perlow.
The Lakers are now setting their sights on the regional tournament in a couple of weeks.
