CCMS Academic Team Captures District Championship for the 16th Straight Year
Calloway County Middle School Academic Team won their 16th consecutive District Governor's Cup tournament on January 13th after a great day of competition among the Lakers, Murray Middle, and South Marshall. The Lakers totaled 87 team points, followed by Murray Middle with 24 team points.
Along with the overall championship, students were awarded medals in all areas of competition! In the area of science, the Lakers swept the top three places with Ava Bogard being named champion, Ella Martin as runner-up, and Collin Naber claiming third place. The Lakers also claimed the top three spots in fine arts with Ella Martin being named champion, Hayden Gilbert in second, followed by Ella Finley in third. In the area of social studies, the Lakers once again claimed the top spots with Molly Pierce claiming the championship, followed by Tyler Saalwaechter in second, and Theodore Perlow in third place. The area of mathematics saw the top places going to the Lakers with Ava Bogard in first place, followed by Kyler McKeel in second, and Mason Riley in third place. Collin Naber claimed the championship in language arts, with Hillary Bohannon following in second place, and Tyler Sebby in fourth place. Finally, the composition competition had Hollyn Aldridge taking the championship, with Mason Riley following in second place, and Leah Hughes in third place.
In written assessment, the Lakers had some scores that brought special recognition across the state! Collin Naber’s language arts score placed him as the highest scoring individual in the state, and his science score finished as the 6th highest in Kentucky. Ava Bogard had the 2nd highest score in the state in mathematics and the 2nd highest score in science. In science, Ella Martin’s score placed 5th in the state, and her fine arts score finished as the 6th highest score in the state. In social studies, Molly Pierce had the 7th highest score, and Tyler Saalwaechter had the 10th highest in the state. These academic team scores are amongst over 250 middle schools that participate in the district tournament. Impressive!
In the team events, the Lakers claimed the championship in both Future Problem Solving and Quick Recall. The Future Problem Solving team is composed of Hillary Bohannon, Samantha Dickinson, Hollyn Aldridge, Allyson Turner, Aubrey Cain, and Hayden Gilbert. The Quick Recall team is composed of Ella Martin, Hillary Bohannon, Molly Pierce, Mason Riley, Tyler Sebby, Tyler Saalwaechter, Ava Bogard, Hayden Gilbert, Kyler McKeel, Theodore Perlow, Mason Falwell, and Collin Naber.
The Lakers are now setting their sights on the regional tournament in a couple of weeks.
