CCMS Academic Team are Governor's Cup Regional Champions
The Calloway County Middle School Academic Team competed in the regional Governor’s Cup tournament on February 4th at Lone Oak Middle School. After a great competition amongst fifteen schools in the first region, the Lakers were named regional champions for an amazing fourteenth time in the past fifteen years! The Lakers totaled 68.5 team points, followed by Lone Oak Middle in second with 25.16 points, and Heath Middle in third place with 14 points.
Along with the overall championship, many students were awarded medals in the different areas of competition! In the area of science, the Lakers claimed the top three spots with Aiden Hooper claiming the regional championship, followed by Ella Martin in second and Sarah Doyle in third place. The Lakers also claimed the top three spots in fine arts with Maya Munoz being named regional champion, Ella Martin coming in as regional runner-up and Hayden Gilbert in third place. The Lakers claimed two spots in mathematics with Ava Bogard claiming regional runner-up followed by Sean Williams in fourth place. The area of social studies had three students medaling with Molly Pierce taking first place, followed by Mariana Hughes and Sean Williams tying for third place. The Lakers had Maya Munoz claiming the language arts championship, followed by Collin Naber in the second-place spot and Hillary Bohannon coming in fourth place. Finally rounding out the written assessment competition, Hillary Bohannon claimed fourth place and Elle Rekow claimed sixth place in composition.
In the team events, the Lakers claimed the championship in both Future Problem Solving and Quick Recall. The quick recall team has a current season record of 22 wins and 0 losses with three tournament championships. The Quick Recall team is composed of Maya Munoz, Aiden Hooper, Sean Williams. Mariana Hughes, Lillie Russell, Divine Ezinma, Riley Hudson, Sarah Doyle, Ella Martin, Molly Pierce, and Ava Bogard. The champion Future Problem Solving team is composed of Sarah Doyle, Addison Finley, Mariana Hughes, Hillary Bohannon and Elle Rekow.
The Lakers had some special recognition from the regional tournament as their scores currently rank them amongst the state leaders. Maya Munoz had two finishes in the top ten of the state with a fine arts score as 1st in the state and a language arts score of 3rd place in the state. In addition, Collin Naber is ranked seventh in the state in the area of language arts, while Ella Martin is ranked 6th in fine arts. The Lakers are now setting their sights on the state tournament later in March!
