CCHS Teacher Mark Dycus is the May Laker Champion for Kids

CCHS Teacher Mark Dycus is the May Laker Champion for Kids

Calloway County Schools has named Mark Dycus as the May Laker Champion for Kids. Dycus is a music teacher at Calloway County High School, specializing in choir and guitar.

The Laker Champion for Kids is awarded each month to a Laker staff member who goes above and beyond for students and colleagues.

Dycus was nominated by CCHS counselor Kim Rydecki.

“He has gone above and beyond for our students during his long tenure at CCHS," said Rydecki. "This man is here before many staff members arrive at the start of each school day and stays well through the end of each day to make sure every note is met before the curtains close. He has a magical ability to form a meaningful relationship with a wide variety of students. Whether it's helping students find a talent with an instrument they never considered or helping students achieve a goal of reaching new vocal heights, he recognizes and respects each individual for who they are with kindness and compassion, never passing judgments or negating someone's feelings. He sees talent in students and provides a safe learning environment where they can grow and flourish into the best versions of themselves. He tackles all the many responsibilities and challenges that are thrown at him with a confidence that many aspire to have. He is the true definition of what it means to be a Laker for Life."

CCHS principal Steve Smith is thankful for Dycus at his school.

“Not only is he a gifted singer and guitarist, he is also one of the most diverse and well-rounded individuals we have at CCHS," said Smith. "He can carry on a conversation with just about anybody on just about any subject. His dedication to his craft is unmatched.  You will find him in his classroom in the corner of the gym on Friday and Saturday nights and on hot summer days.  To know him is to love him. He brings nothing but positive energy to any environment, and with every interaction I have with him, I walk away feeling better about myself.  He is a positive light for his students and always finds a way to praise and encourage our kids.  He passes out hugs and compliments with the best of them, and when he retires, he will leave a legacy of compassion and dedication for his students and for this school that will be impossible to replace.”
