The Calloway County High School Science Bowl teams competed on Friday, February 24, 2023 in the 15th annual Department of Energy Regional Science Bowl on the UK-Paducah Campus. The annual event tests students’ knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, geology, space, energy, and math. The Lakers competed against teams from Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois in the all-day event, where the winner advances to the National Science Bowl in Washington, DC.
Calloway Team 1 ended the day with a close loss to McCracken County, taking 2nd place overall and winning $1000 for the school. The Laker team led by Isaac Martin, captain, Ethan Cain, Amber Wu, Elizabeth Lanier, and Aary Patel defeated Marshall 2 (108-12), Graves 1 (126-18), and Graves 2 (168-14) in morning pool play. The afternoon bracket placed the Lakers against Graves 1 again, winning 90-12 in the semifinals. The Lakers drew a tough set of questions in the final round, taking their only loss of the day to the Mustangs (20-38).
Calloway Team 2 went 2-1 in morning pool play, defeating Livingston and Ballard and taking their only loss to McCracken, the event champions. Calloway 2 was led by Connor Pile, Brayan Ventura, Tommy Gomez, Max Chapman and Sam Houston.
