CCHS Academic Team Wins WKAA President's Cup Tournament

CCHS Academic Team Wins WKAA President's Cup Tournament

Calloway County High School's Academic Team took first place in the West Kentucky Academic Association's President's Cup Tournament, held on the campus of Murray State University-Paducah on January 16th. The Lakers were one of 12 teams from Region 1 competing in the weeklong event. Overall placements were Calloway Varsity 1st place (138 points), Murray High 2nd place (74 points), McCracken County 3rd place, and Calloway Junior Varsity 4th place. The Lakers are back-to-back champions in the event after winning in 2025 also.

In Quick Recall team competition, the Lakers Varsity and Junior Varsity teams both advanced to the semi-finals, with the Varsity team taking first place overall after a day of undefeated matches. The Junior Varsity team placed fourth overall.

The Varsity QR team led by Connor Pile, Aubrey Naber, Maya Munoz and Ava Bogard, and assisted by Aiden Hooper, Max Chapman, Sean Williams, and Grant Todd went 7-0 for the day, defeating St. Mary B 20-2, Ballard Memorial 18-3, Murray High 21-7, McCracken 16-0 in morning play. Seeded first for afternoon bracket play, the Lakers forged ahead picking up wins over Marshall A 39-6, Calloway JV 40-11, and McCracken 30-24 in the final match. 

The Junior Varsity QR team led by Ella Martin, Collin Naber, Mason Riley, Molly Kate Pierce, and assisted by Mason Falwell, Theodore Perlow, Kyler McKeel, Kyler Myers, Tyler Saalwaechter, and Zach Haws went 2-2 in morning pool play and entered the bracket as a 5 seed, where they defeated Livingston County and Ballard Memorial before being eliminated by their own Varsity team in the semifinals. 

Earlier in the week, students competed in Content Area assessments. The Lakers had numerous individuals place in their respective areas:

Composition: 2nd place Madison Morris, 5th place Vayla Carlisle, 6th place Mason Riley, 7th place Leah Hughes, and 10th place Hollyn Aldridge

Math: 2nd place Ava Bogard, 3rd place Sean Williams

Science: 2nd place Connor Pile (tie), 2nd place Aiden Hooper (tie), 5th place Ava Bogard, 6th place Collin Naber, 9th place Kyler Myers

Social Studies: 4th place Grant Todd, 5th place Tyler Saalwaechter, 7th place Theodore Perlow (tie), 7th place Aiden Hooper (tie).

Language Arts: 1st place Aubrey Naber, 3rd place Collin Naber, 5th place Ella Martin, 8th place Hillary Bohannon (tie), 8th place Aaliyah Byrley (tie)

Arts and Humanities: 1st place Maya Munoz, 2nd place Ella Martin, 4th place Connor Pile, 7th place Hayden Gilbert

The Lakers are coached by Erica Gray, Lane Springer, Dan Thompson, Margaret Richter, Jayden Morris, and Cassidy McAllister.
