Calloway County High School sophomores Amelia Slaton and Aiden Grooms were selected to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) from April 28 – May 1 at the Wendell Ford Regional Training Center in Greenville, Kentucky.  The students were sponsored by the Murray Rotary Club to join 40 other sophomores from across Kentucky in the highly acclaimed leadership conference.

RYLA emphasizes leadership, citizenship, personal growth, and service.  It provides an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders and encourages leadership of youth by youth while publicly recognizing young people who are rendering service to their communities.

Over the course of the 3½ day conference, the students were placed into eight teams, focusing on action through the Rotary Four-Way Test of What to Think, Say, or Do.

The event culminated with an awards presentation with the young Lakers collecting hardware for their efforts.  Ms. Slaton and her Blue Team medaled, placing 3rd as Overall Team of the event. Mr. Grooms and his Yellow Team were chosen as the Top Overall Team of the conference and 2nd place in the talent event.  Aiden was also chosen as the top individual for his team, collecting a Rotary International Club coin.

Both Slaton and Grooms are now eligible for a $1,000 RYLA scholarship.
