
The Calloway County Middle School Academic Team competed in the regional Governor’s Cup tournament on February 8th and 9th at Heath Middle School. After two days of competition amongst thirteen schools in the first region, the Lakers were named regional champions for an amazing thirteenth time in the past fourteen years! The Lakers totaled 66 team points, followed by Murray Middle in second with 19.5 points, and Lone Oak Middle in third place with 18 points.
Along with the overall championship, many students were awarded medals in the different areas of competition! In the area of science, the Lakers claimed three spots with Connor Pile and Aiden Hooper sharing the regional championship with Sam Houston finishing in fourth place. The Lakers claimed the top two spots in mathematics with Amber Wu being named regional champion and Tommy Gomez coming in as regional runner-up. The Lakers claimed three spots in Fine Arts with Connor Pile sharing the regional championship followed by Maya Munoz in third place and Nora Burns in fifth place. The area of social studies had three students medaling with Tommy Gomez finishing in second place, followed by Grant Todd in third, and Samuel Houston in fifth place. The Lakers had Aubrey Naber claiming the language arts championship, followed by Amber Wu in the second-place spot. Finally rounding out the written assessment competition, Vayla Carlisle claimed third place and Dakotah Pittman claimed fourth place in Composition.
In the team events, the Lakers claimed the championship in both Future Problem Solving and Quick Recall. The quick recall team has a current season record of 27 wins and 0 losses with three tournament championships. The Quick Recall team is composed of Amber Wu, Tommy Gomez, Aubrey Naber, Connor Pile, Samuel Houston, Vayla Carlisle, and Maya Munoz. The Future Problem Solving team is composed of Dakotah Pittman, Aubrey Naber, Vayla Carlisle, Madison Morris, Sadie Lilly, and Ansley Kennedy.
The Lakers had some special recognition from the regional tournament as their scores currently rank them amongst the state leaders. The language arts score of Aubrey Naber places her as 1st in the state. Maya Munoz is ranked 1st in the state in the area of Fine Arts, while Aiden Hooper is ranked 5th in science. Amber Wu is currently ranked amongst state leaders in two categories with 3rd place in Language Arts and 5th place in Mathematics. Connor Pile also has two finishes in the top ten of the state with a Fine Arts score as 1st in the state and a science score of 5th place in the state. The Lakers are now setting their sights on the state tournament later in March.
