Calloway County Middle School MathCOUNTS team competed on Saturday, March 26th at the state championship held at Western Kentucky University. The tournament consisted of teams and individuals from around the state that scored well enough in chapter competitions to qualify for a chance to compete for the state math title. At the conclusion of the tournament, the Laker team gathered both team and individual recognition, as they were named the third-place team in the state of Kentucky for the 2021-22 season!
After three rounds of math competition, the Lakers received an overall score worthy of placing them third in the state, just behind Meyzeek Middle and Kentucky County Day. This finish is the highest score in the history of Calloway County’s MathCOUNTS teams! The members of this team are Connor Pile, Aubrey Naber, Tommy Gomez, and Amber Wu. The Lakers were also assisted by Sean Williams who qualified for the state tournament as an individual competitor.
The Lakers received some more special recognition, as Amber Wu placed as one of the highest scoring individuals at the state tournament. Amber’s score was high enough that she is officially ranked as the 8th place finisher in the state. This award came with several scholarship distinctions for Amber, as she received a $12,000 scholarship from the University of Kentucky, a $6,000 scholarship from the University of Louisville, and a $4,000 scholarship from Western Kentucky University. In addition, Amber qualified for the countdown round consisting of math quick recall questions, where she finished third place in the state.
